as far as video codecs go... there's plenty of alternatives... by far the best I've seen so far has been Quicktime's newest HD stuff... H .264 the suposed standard for the next gen DVD players (blue ray/HD DVD) but it's pretty heavy duty and taxes a system pretty hard. beyond that my favorite video compression codec is Xvid... but Sorenson 3 (Quicktime) and WMV9 have the advantage of being much more readily available and widely used due to their corperate backing...
