It's been a great run in the British car world, MG midget in 74-75, TR6 02-10, and TR3 14-25.
We also owned a Saab, a few BMWs and Porsche's along the way.
Linda and I decided we wanted a "grand touring" car we could hop in and drive anywhere, without a trunk full of spares.
After a fair amount of research and patient shopping, we chose a 2009 Porsche 997.2 cabriolet. Road Trip!
I still have a few parts and tools to sell on BCF.
Basil, thanks for hosting the best British Car Forum on the web, also thanks to those who shared your knowledge and made our ownership less work and more fun.
Bluees sold on BAT and now lives in West Nyak NY.

Yes, the dark side can seduce even the best of us with shiney techknowledgey. Most people come back to
reality when they have to payout the BIG $ for stupid little problems at a dealership.

I have a perfectly sorted Porsche, but am selling it on BaT because I decided I needed a Jaguar, which is very unsorted. I sometimes think I am crazy, then I look at the Jag and realize it is all ok.

It is fun to have a "Dark Side" in the stable. Mine is a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder all set up for Street Prepared Solo II use. 3.0 liter. 5-speed. Koni Shocks. Serious sway bars 8.5" wide wheels. Great for a blast up the mountain on a brisk Sunday morning. Cheap and fast. ...J.D.

Jeez, I always thought “going to the dark side” was acquiring a MG.

Beautiful Jag. Hope you have loads of fun. Will you be learning auto mechanics all over again, or do you already know the car. BTW, has BAT totally outdone Ebay Motors? Is Ebay a place to shop cars still? Another question: Does BAT operate the same way as Ebay with bidding and last second bid maneuvers and strategy buying--or is it more civilized?
 
Purchasing a car on Ebay is much more like playing roulette than is BAT. I bought 6 cars between 2001 and 2012 on ebay, and 3 out of the 6 had undisclosed body damage. Two of the three also had EGR system failures shortly after purchase.

Two of the three "good ones" (which were all Triumphs!) came from a seller I already knew was trustworthy - so that indicates that 3 of the 4 cars where I didn't already know the seller had undisclosed faults. I still look at cars on ebay but am much more careful now: Caveat Emptor!

BAT does not allow "sniping" at the last second the way ebay does - is is, indeed, more civilized
 
Does BAT allow a seller to remove the item from auction and sell outside the platform?
 
I bought my TR-6 on Ebay. I had lots of pictures that I carefully blew up to maximum size and looked over very carefully for a week or 2 before I pulled trigger on the deal. What you cannot see is it's mechanical problems, but I felt I could handle most anything it could throw at me. I have been 2 years getting it sorted. I drive it, I fix something else. I drive is more, and fix it more. It is becoming better with time. I think it was someone's garage decoration. I'm setting down to the small stuff now, and the things I felt were never right from the factory. I have re-engineered a few things. I would not recommend buying a car that way for just anybody. You really need to know your stuff. I was a professional mechanic, back years ago. ...J.D.
 
Interesting. Maybe frustrating. So far, I’ve driven hundreds of miles to see whatever car I’m buying, and that has worked. The one time I dared not travel to see the car, I called the seller and got a good sense for honesty and just relied on that—
 
When I bought my Triumph, I looked for one a couple of years for one here locally. There were just none. Seems like a lot more of them were on the east coast. I finally bought mine from a seller in Florida. The owner had died, and it was being sold to settle the estate. Apparently, there are some of them out here in Southern California, because I see them on the internet at some car events. I had a little more work to do when I got it shipped out here, but it was what I was looking for. Minimum of rust, unrestored, numbers matching. Real straight body. The drive train was all sound. I think someone has been through the engine, gear box and maybe the rear end. A lot of hydraulic and lighting issues, but nothing I could not handle myself. So goes the old car hobby. ...J.D.
