Getting the hub off the drive shaft

I am trying to replace the Rotoflex couplings on the 69 GT6, how tough should it be to get the hubs off the drive shaft?

I put the in my shop press, and 6 tons won't do it....these are supposed to come off aren't they?

Has anyone else had this much trouble?

Or is there something I'm not doing right?

Hi Mikey,

I'm not all that familiar with GT6 or Rotoflex, but if the rear hubs are anything like those on my solid axle TR4 and IRS TR4A, you will need more than a 6 ton press to get them to pop loose. Try a 10 or 20 ton model.

I am assuming here that you are removing the outer hub where the road wheel mounts. Perhaps for your car, I know for mine, there was a special tool made for this purpose. However, lots of folks get them apart, eventually, with a press. It just takes a big one and leave it under pressure for a few minutes and wait for the "bang". Leave the nut on too, loosely fitted, to keep things from flying around.

Something I've heard of with IRS cars, but not done, is lapping the joint to make it the very strongest and best fit possible, during reassembly. The large nut probably gets some serious torque, too, check your service manual. On my car it's on the order of 150 ft lbs or more.

They can take staggering amounts of force to come loose. There is a special tool for it, that distributes the force evenly around the hub. I strongly recommend using it, as otherwise you'll bend the hub. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Trust me - I know. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif If you can't locate the tool, I suggest sending the shafts to an LBC specialist who can shift them with the proper hub puller. The rest of the hub job is straightforward, once they've popped loose from the axle. Good luck!
 
Thanks guys....I'll try to find a shop that can do this...like my dad always told me...you need the right tool for the job!
