Getting new top fitted

So after living with the pack-away top style since last year, I broke down and decided to replace it with a new (and year correct) black folding frame style top. I just use the top too much to hassle with the pack-away one.

Dropped the car off yesterday afternoon, should have it back Monday. The current pack-away top will go to a local MGB owner who has no top at all. Feel a bit silly as the pack-away top is less than a year old, but sometimes you just have to admit that a decision wasn't the right one and cut your losses. Ah well...

So here's the car at the upholsterers, ready for its new top.

Moss-sourced Robbins top (with zip-out rear window).
 
curious Drooartx, but can't yo ujust snap it on yourself? I apologize if that sounds dumb...

The rear fittings on the top are all installed from the factory, but the top needs to be fit correctly to the header rail (where the top attaches to the windshield frame). This requires some careful measuring and adjusting and getting everything riveted/glued into place correctly -- I'll leave that bit to the professionals who have the proper tools/knowledge to do it.
 
ah gotcha..i thoguht it was one of those easy jobs but I should have realized nothing comes easy with these cars!

Were I in a different position I'd probably try and tackle it myself, but spare time is my most precious commodity these days so I have to make decisions on what I can do and what I need to have others do for me.

No so much that things aren't easy, just that I'm new to all of this still and somethings are worth having someone else struggle with.

I do need to fix the alignment so the wheel is properly centered... that's what you meant, right?

Actually it's MY car that has the steering wheel in the wrong position.....must have been a dyslexic mechanic on the line the day they built my car, darn thing is on the opposite side as yours!!

Were I closer I'd be there, Doc. I'd like to know how to do this myself. Maybe when this top wears out.

I still get amused/bemused looks when I drive it around. Few weeks ago had a Jeep pull up next to me on the freeway and sit there with all onboard staring at me. Just waved back and smiled. :smile:
 
Drew...Carla I definitely understand not having time for everything. A new top is pretty straight-forward though. With no experience, we put ours on in an afternoon and it's great !!

Picked up the MGB from the upholsterers today, new top looks good. Fits nicely, and we did a quick test down-and-up and boy is it easier! Much improved, and well worth the effort to switch it.

One more project crossed off the list!

Guy did a great job, I'm pleased. And boy, is this top design easier to use than the pack-away one I had. Much nicer!

Drew,

very nice! So they hand built that top or did you buy it and they fitted it on for you? I guess I did not realize that upholsterers could do the plastic windows too?

The top is from Moss (Robbins brand). He just did the fitting for me.

I've had him do some modifications to my tonneau cover as well -- he made the driver's headrest pouch larger last year to accommodate how far I have the seat back, and he's doing a few other things right now for me. Handy to know.

I'm gonna post it again in case anybody missed it: Robbins makes the best tops I've ever fitted. MG, Lotus, Alfa, all of 'em.
