Getting a car smogged.

I notice in Larry's (SCGuy) post about his bea-u-ti-ful TR8 being delivered and smogged that the car was parked in a special booth where a gorgeous gal helped with the paperwork and the expectant fathers all sat around nervously waiting for the results. Almost like the delivery room at General.

Here in Louisiana there is no such thing. To get my TR6 "inspected", once a year I drive over to Gaudet's Gas Station where Gaudet sits outside on a bench seat retrieved from a wrecked Suburban, along with his very old yellow lab and Father Landry, also very old and retired.

I drive up, don't even turn off the ignition, holler <u>"Gaudet"</u> real loud and Eric lumbers over with a fresh inspection sticker. The word inspection is used loosely here. Mostly refers to Eric's comments about my car "looking good".

I remember when I first had this TR6 inspected from Gaudet I didn't have any lights installed, much less a windshield. I promised Gaudet I would stick it on myself when I got the glass in. I did. I also took the backroad to Gaudet's to avoid any Sheriff's deputy hollering at me about no brake lights.

Takes all of 5 minutes, longer if I stay and talk to Father Landry or pet the dog.

Oh, to have an Inspection Babe like in Larry's post. On the other hand, I don't have to sweat passing inspection over here, unless it's hot outside.

Here in NC they passed a new law that cars over 30 years old dont need inspections any more, I ask to buy a sticker just so I wouldnt get stopped and have to hassel with the cops and try to explain that I did need an inspection any more

No mandatory safety inspections here in Wisconsin. Seven counties in the SE part of the state DO require smog inspections due to Chicago's smog blowing to the north...

Well, you guys are really missing out on a lot of fun. Here in northern Delaware any car from 1968 on has to pass the emissions test. The requirements vary based on year of manufacture. My '71 has to pass an idle test with less than 6% CO and less than 600 ppm hydrocarbons. It only took two tries to make it with my TR6 last week. The car got hot sitting in line (yes, you get to sit in line for about 30 minutes waiting for your turn) and would barely idle by the time I made it to the front of the line. I failed with 11% CO. I made a quick trip up the road to let the engine cool off and then back to the retest lane. The line there was shorter and I turned the engine off while I waited. Passed that one at 5% CO /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif ...and then back into another line inside DMV for the rest of the paperwork.

Not a smog check, but in 1968 in up state NY, I was pulled over in my TR4 for an equipment check. Coming from California, and knowing my horn did not work I thought no big deal. A fix it ticket. Well when the trooper asked me to honk my horn... I stood up in the car and yelled "GET OUT OF THE WAY" while waving my hand.

A trip to the Justice of the Peace and twenty bucks later I was on my way.

Never could keep the horn working.

Oh, all the cars pulled over were from out of state.

No mandatory safety inspections here either (in W.A.), but if there were I would be wishing for the 'babe' option........
