German Coast Guard

That reminds of when I found out a guy was from Montana.
I asked him what he did for a living. He replied "I'm in the
Coast Guard".
I had to think about that one for awhile.I guess it's a good thing he wasen't from Kansas.

Hey, we have Coast Guard patroling here at Lake Tahoe. Probably keep the peace between the North Shore and South Shore, CA/Stateline, NV. on Friday nights.

I can top that - We have Coast Guard, US Customs, AND INS in Little Rock - try figuring that one out!

You need INS in Little Rock.....hehehe

[/ QUOTE ]INS was pretty much absorbed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) along with Boarder Patrol & US Customs. Interestingly enough most of the rank & file of INS personnel now serve with US Customs. About the only way to tell who is (or was) who between Customs & INS is their side arms. Most Customs folks carry Glocks while the INS folks carry Berretta 92s. Other than that they pretty much do the same jobs now.

But don’t be surprised about seeing boarder security folks in other parts of the country because we have a large illegal alien population spread out all over the place.

And Tony I hope you understand that the guys in uniform protecting the boarder and/or hunting down illegals ain’t at fault? I see their work on a daily basis and can tell you first hand that they are doing the best with what they got. While I ain’t a huge fan of their union – these guys are for the most part professionals fighting a good fight. Albeit a frustrating up hill battle most of the time, they didn’t create the situation we are currently struggling to deal with.

I view all of DHS folks in the trenches in the same respectful light as I do our Military, the Police, Fire and other First responders.

The more things change... "...doin' the best with what they got."

I wish ya hadn't relayed that somewhat depressing info, Bret.

...and certainly agree with ya as to the respect these guys deserve. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

I consider the guys humping on the borders & outon the line wherever just like our soldiers - they deserve our respect every time they put their life on the line (which has becomre pretty continuous)....its the folks in DC who make their job so hard that I've a peeve with.

Amen. To all that. That is as close to a ban as I care to get.

Yup - me too!

Sorry, I didn’t mean to mislead you by that statement.

Actually what I meant by the “with what they got” was referring to the “situation” not a lack of resources. i.e. they didn’t create the situation, but are doing their best working within the system and it's flaws. All that and at the same time they are constantly seeking out & evaluating new methods & technologies to improve their effectiveness.

It is amazing when I see the guys in the field work at the ports. It’s a multi layered system that uses both low & high tech assets as well as good old fashioned human nature. All of these systems overlap and support one another. Some are none-invasive and passive and hardly noticeable to the untrained eye. While others are in your face and quite visible.

I know it sounds kind'a corny but I get a kick out of my job feel pretty lucky to be a small part of this and help these guys do their jobs.
