Generator/Dynamo Problems

I have a 1933 MG J2. It's been updated to the 2 Brush oppose to a 3 Brush system.

The generator was recently fixed as it was not charging. It didn't seem like the generator was working again, so I polarized it and that seemed to fix it for about 10 minutes. Then I had to polarized it again, and have to keep doing so every 5 minutes or so.

I opened the regulator and made adjustments for the contacts, and nothing seems to help. Every few minutes it needs to be re-polarized.

Any suggestions?

When you say it was fixed, what did you have done?? I don't know specifically what's wrong but I'd have the control box checked for proper operation and the generator in case the field coils or armature have some sort of intermittant fault. and I'd go to or send them to someone experienced with prewar components since there could be something special, (obsolete), needed that a regular automotive shop may no longer be aware of.

Clean the contacts in the regulator? Green ScotchBrite has been the best thing to use.

I don't recall the specifics, but I seem to remember there are other changes required to convert a 3-brush generator to a 2-brush unit. You may want to make sure the wiring and related components are all correct as well.
