Gearbox Rebuild

I'm restoring a TR3, and want to freshen up the gearbox with new bearings, synchros and whatever else I find that needs attention. The factory service manual mentions a Mainshaft Circlip that needs a special tool for removal. I remember years ago (back in the '70s) having taken TR gearboxes apart without this. Is it neccessary?? Or, maybe my hammer was bigger back then... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif I haven't opened the box up yet, but want all the ducks in a row before I do.

I've not done it, but most say the two tools - one to remove the circlip, the other to reinstall it - are almost mandatory. They will cost you about $100 apiece, but save hours of frustration and possible damage to other parts. The Roadster Factory sells them.

When I worked in a garage 35 yrs. ago we used to tear them down all the time with just circlip spreader pliers and screwdrivers. But occasionally that would prove to be a real knucklebuster. Usually because the machined split in the circlip wasn't quite angled right. Just make sure you put on a new circlip because they almost always get ruined taking them off without benefit of the churchill tools. Carefully check the surface of the countershaft for deterioration. Check the second gear(tophat)bushing for a crack, if it isn't already broken (common problem) and if you do replace it check the spacing as shown in the manual. Try and get NOS synchros if you can and if there's an OD it would pay to strip it down also. Good luck.
