Gearbox overfill

Where would extra fluid go if it were to be overfilled. I thought I had the correct amount in the gearbox, however, I am getting a leak when topped it off. I lost some fluid before I put a grommet in the speedo connection. Assuming I lost about 1/4 quart, I replaced. Will the tranny "throw-out" what isn't needed? Not too much of course. Just wondering why she is dripping.

The tranny WILL drip if over-filled, mainly from the rear "seal" at the drive-shaft. It is however rather difficult to overfill since to fill it one adds oil 'til it just starts to overflow from the filler! You can overfill if the car is jacked up at the rear, and can leak, even if a little low when jacked up at the front (esp. if the rear seal is questionable!).

The rear seal is new with the fresh rebuild. It seems to be leaking from the front?? Through the cotter pinned clutch housing drain. Is this possible?

I am almost positive that I over filled a bit.

The only way I think it would leak from the bell housing cotter pin at the bottom is if either oil is leaking from the rear engine seal, or if it is fresh tranny oil, from failure of the front cover gasket. Oil could also leak from the input shaft (first motion shaft) if over-filled and the car is jacked up at the rear (there is no "seal" per se for it in the front cover)!

I am thinking through the input shaft. I hope!!

Is first gear supposed to have a bit of a whine to it?

1st gear is supposed to have a lot of whine to it... makes people notice you.

I fill mine from the gearshift lever...it is actually easier to open than try to fill from the tunnel....typically causes overfill but it does just leak out excess...

All you need to make it easy to top up from the filler is a screw-on hose spout for the oil bottle (mine twists to open and close) and a magnetized socket (to hold the plug) with a universal on it to reach the plug through the tunnel access and the job is a piece of cake and (if you do it on level ground) just at the proper level!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Or one of those pumps for a quart of oil. ORely has them for about 3 buck. Not sure how I ever got along without.

I insert a 1/2" by 3' long clear tygon tubing into the fill hole and use a 90W plastic quart container with the squirt top inserted in the other end from inside the engine compartment. Just elevate the container and squeze. Still requires to get under the car.

I never have to go under the car (except to drain the tranny)!! To top up/fill the tranny I use this... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

My point exactly...THANKS...a wrench and a pour
and she's filled....I'll stick to the gearshift...

Bibber, how can you tell if the tranny is filled to the correct level by filling from the shifter? It seems to me that you will always have an over-full tranny by filling from there, even with the "extra" leaking out all over the place! The tunnel must be awash with oil!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Won't have to worry about rust though /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

A spridget gearboxes proper amount is a 1.5 US quarts, Spridget do and can leak form the front cover by the input shaft, in fact Winners Circle sells front cover with seals installed and has as long as I can remember.

Mike...they beat me to it...actually it leaks a little anyway..so I guess I just put up with it....the hardest part for me is yanking up the carpet and getting the filler bolt out and back in...it's just easier to do it for me thru the lever and you're right it usually overfills but I've owned the Spridget for years now and usually it doesn't take much to top it off each season....
