Gearbox Oil/Fluid/Grease

I've got a 79 Midget 1500. As you may remember, I had my transmission semi-rebuilt while I was swapping engines. Well, we put the whole thing back together w/o filling the gearbox, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this now.

If you know of one please tell.

An acquaintance (who's been known to bend the truth) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif says I can just lift it in the front, take off the gear shifter and pour it in there. He says it'll be slow going but it all runs into the gearbox.

Any truth to this???

Thanks,
Mario

You can't just take the gear lever/stick out, you have to take the whole remote off - 4 nuts on top of the box about 12" in front of the gear stick.

I think then you might be able to fill it up, although it's 20 years since a took one of those boxes apart so I'm a bit vague.

Anyway, there must be a filler!?! Does the manual not show one? Have you taken the rubber covers out of the tunnel (roughly by the drivers right toe on a LHD car). Pre 1500 cars have the filler just behind the rubber cover, but my recollection of a 1500 fails on that detail!

It can be filled from below using a pump oil gun, the fill plug is on the passenger side. Stop by NAPA and ask to them what you are doing and they should have a inexpensive version for you.

Ask Bill Tilford if they can be filled from the top.. or is he the guy you are referring to?

The filler is on the right side of the trans case. As Trevor says, a pump gun would do the trick. A funnel and long hose from the hood side would work too.

Mario, the plastic bottle of gear oil has the pointed end - snip it off and connect a suitable length of 3/8 or so rubber tubing ( fuel line works for me ). Take the plug out the side of the trans. then put the end of the hose in there and squeeze until it starts weeping out. The level is the bottom of the hole. Of course the car needs to be somewhat level for this. By the way, are you about ready to roll? Keep us up, Jim B.

And be sure that you use proper Gear Oil (I like the Redline Synthetic 80W).
Older Spridgets (such as 1275 cars) use 10W-30 motor oil in the trans).

First, let me quell any rumors that may be started w/this post... NO! I was NOT talking about Bill Tilford. LOL!!! Very funny Trevor!

Jim, I am about ready to roll or at least try to. I'm taking the day off work tomorrow to see what I can do.

I'll check the weight of the oil too.

Hey, can someone explain again about setting the crank mark to 0 on the timing indiator tab?

Mario
