I'm sure this will rank right up at the top of the list for dumb ?'s! BUT, I can't see these numbers on my gearbox. From all I read, they are located on the RH side near the dipstick--is that correct? Can they even be seen if the car is completely assembled??
Thanks folks,
Tom

Tom, the gearbox serial number is located on the passenger's side of the gearbox case, stamped into a raised area (or "boss") in the middle of one of the "waffles" of the case. If your car still has its original gearbox, you should find the number 14664 stamped there. BJ8 gearboxes also had an "M" stamped above the number, probably to distinguish BJ8 'boxes from BJ7s.

You might be able to see the number from under the car, but you will need a light and mirror, I believe.

Thank you very much, Steve. Exactly what I needed to know.
BTW, I'm still working on tracking down my long lost '65 BJ8. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.
