Gearbox compatability?

No, not a direct replacement; however, which way do you want to go? MGB trans into MGA or MGA trans into MGB?

My car is a MGA, second gear syncro is tired, I hoped to pick up an second hand box and rebuild it, then a quick swap out one day.

I'll see if I can get one at Beaulieu autojumble in a few weeks.

Anyone happen to know the sizes of the front wheel bearings on a MGA so i can go to my local bearing stockist?

Whic MGA do you have? AFAIK, there are three different tranny's. There are differenb ones for the 1500 engine vs the 1600. And, I think there are two different 1600 trannys with the main difference being the location of the starter.

Also, the MA tranny has the end of the drive shaft slide into the tail housing while the B has a flange. Though I understand the tailstocks can be unbolted and swapped.

Yes and no. The internals are nearly identical but the starter location could be an issue. The late MGA used a flange on the rear but the earlier models did not, so if you have an early unit then you may need to replace or modify the drive shaft.

For easiest swapping, try to find a trans out of an MG with engine just like yours.
