Gear shift lever twisting

Good evening everyone. This is my first real post (first post was on intro forum) so here goes. The DPO of my 1976 Midget told me he put a transmission in the car. The problem is that the gear shift lever twists making it very difficult to get in gear at times and potentially dangerous for my wife to drive. You have to be very cognizant of the lever position while driving because the lever may hit the radio housing when shifting into 1st or 3rd. Did they forget to put something back in while installing the lever?

Yep he did, is a thingee in the top of the shift hole that the shift lever sets in, kind of a key that keeps it from twisting.

The good news is that you can get at it from the top without removeing the tranny.

On any smooth or ribbed box I think reguardless of year. Course I could be haveing a senior moment Jeff.

Spitfires, now clue but would not susprise me if they worked the same way, why screw up a good thing.

Who said spitfire. sigh

Ahh, thought that was 77 and on. sorry.

So what holds the shift lever on spitfires?

Jack, Im not all that familiar with the later, single rail, Spit Trannies, but I think there are either one or two pins in the top of the shift tower to keep the shifter from rotating.
Hopefully one of the 1500 folks will be along with a definitive answer.
Jeff

Book looks like two pins one on each side.
