Gear Shift Knob Removal

Ok, this is going to seem like a silly question but here goes anyway. I am trying to remove the shifter knob on "molly" to replace the shift boot and the shifter knob. Sounds simple enough but, I can't seem to get the shifter knob loose. I'm afraid to but to much force on it in fear of breaking something. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? The bottom chrome part of the knob has flats cut into it that appear to be made for a wrench but I've not manage to move it yet. Are there some set screws somewhere that I'm missing? Help!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Is there a nut under the knob? Some have one that keeps it from moving until you loosen that nut & then you can unscrew the knob.

Yes, there should be a very thin jam nut underneath the knob. Grab the knob and twist it the opposite way while applying torque to the nut and it should come right off.

Thanks for the responses guys but it turns out I was having a "Senior" moment. Not 5 minutes after I posted, I went back to the car and discovered that the top of the factory knob pops off and under it is a nut which holds on the knob body. Loosen it up and everything screws right off. DUH /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Ah, you've got the "2-piece" knob so you can install an OD switch.

UH......Is that a good thing? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

not necesarily good or bad. But it certianly is neat to have a over drive switch in the top of your gear shifter, if you have an OD in your car that is... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
