Gear Shift Freezes Between Shifts

I have a 1966 Series 1 XKE coupe. Every so often, the gearbox shifter just freezes between shifts and I can't get it into gear. After I coast for a while and pump the clutch pedal a few times, it works again, although I have no idea if the pumping really helps or not. Any ideas what the problem is?

First thing I would do is when it happens, coast to the side, leave it running, and carefully try reverse. If clutch hydraulics, you will immediately get grinding (hence the "carefully" warning). If it grinds, it's hydraulics. If you're concerned about grinding reverse, shut it off, select first gear, and with no cars in front of you, try to start it with clutch in. If it jumps, hydraulics. Broken plate does not come and go, it's permanent, so I'd be looking at hydraulics.
