Gear Shift Boot Installation

Does anyone know the "correct" installation of the rubber boot that goes over the gear shifter in a BJ8? I have seen it with the partrution pointed down toward the transmission and with it pointed up towards the shift know. I thought the down methode was correct but since it has torn again, I thought I'd check with the troops before I install the next one.

Thanks in advance.

"Pointed up towards the shift KnoB!" Frank.---Keoke

Keoke,
Thanks for the guidance ... looks like I've been wrong on this. I just got my new one and I'll see if this way lasts longer.

Thanks again.

Frank,
Good question. Also, a chrome ring should be placed around the top of the boot. See attachment.
Roger

Roger, I do not know where that chrome ring came from its cute but I have never seen another one in my Healey Life.---Keoke

Roger,
Don't listen to man behind the curtain /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The Chrome ring for the Gear Lever Grommet is part number AHH 5388 and shown in the Body Service Parts List and my BJ7 has one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Oh my, funny. AH 101 for Keohe.

I still ain't never seen one. Thats my story and Im sticking to it---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

--OH! Now I see, it was only used up to and including those BJ7 cars.

--Yep and its gonna be Middle School english class for you if you don't spell KEOKE! correct.- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

OHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The reason Keoke can't find the ring is that the shift boot is installed "upside down". At least all the original factory photos that I've seen show the stem pointing down and this was done to give the Healey interior a more spacious environment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cheers,
John

Well John, it seems they dropped the ring after BJ7 # 20352. So all the lucky fellas with BJ8's don't need no stinkin ring.Prolly what causing them tranny jump out anyway. If somebody put a ring like that around my gear lever I know something would jump out.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This just keeps on getting more interesting. Is this a Concours judging point and if so what's their view? I think it looks better pointed down but the action of the lever is better suited by it pointing up.

Frank,

The Concours Guidelines say,

"BT7-BJ8" (center shift) - This black rubber boot extends its bellows upwards, but the center goes down and unless the tunnel is mounted correctly, can obstruct the selection of 1st and 3rd. This was a factory design problem. Many boots split when new and were replaced under warranty.

-----------

So got it? Bellows up but stem pushed in so that it points down. And put the little chrome ring on (underneath)if you have a BJ7 so that the boot doesn't slide down and get in the way of the shifting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

HI John, "BT7- BJ8" Does not agree with the application as specifed in the Factory Parts Manual. ---Keoke-??

Since when have you been a stickler for detail! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif We all know that factory manual was an after thought!

At any rate they (the concours patrol) mention that it is a design problem. So if/when you are getting your car judged turn the stem down. Then for the rest of the time, turn it up if it is interfering with shifting. Pragmatic approach, eh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well John, Speaking of after thoughts. Them guidelines came a long long time after the Manual and are prolly just speculation on the authors part.---Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif-

Ain't that the truth! (If anyone has doubts about that, we'll all just sit around the campfire and ask Uncle Reid to tell us his 'concours story' one mo' time!)

But to be fair (to the writers of the guidelines), I understand they check many 'unmolested' cars for the details .

John /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif But,if they did check unmolested cars they should have put them in the book instead of those improperly restored ones.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

yep, hate it when they say this is the way it is supose to be except for this and that, etc.

Show me a real one.
