Gear Reduction Starter Question

I am installing a gear reduction starter on my Spitfire MK2 and have a question. The only way I can get the starter to line up and clear the steering column and fuel pump, puts the electrical connection right up against the block. Has anyone else installed this type of starter on their Spitfire, and have you had any problems with the installation?

JKB, If it's a decent GR starter it is clockable.

The Gustafson starters allow you to re-position the mounting face (clockable as Don put it) Most gear reduction starters for our LBCs these days are made by Gustafson https://www.gustafsonmachine.com/ and re-sold by teh various distributors out there.

Justin, just to expound on that. If most are made by them
Here is the one they sell for the 8

I see you are spot on on your statement and had no idea this was so.

I can get the starter to fit. My concern is the clearance between the cable terminal on the starter and the engine block, about 1/2". Is this normal for an installation? If anyone has a picture they can post of their starter installed on a Spitfire that would help. Thanks.

What we are saying is...
Re clock it and turn the starter body away from the block if it make you uneasy.

Some high torque starters have twice as many holes for clocking. The ones with fewer holes might not fit your needs. Half an inch is not bad for clearance, you might can bend the hot wire tab enough away from the block to make you comfortable.

hey jk do as don says just re-adjust the mounting plate to suit your needs and by all means use the spacer from your triumph starter or the gear reduction starter won't dissingage from flywheel ; i put one in 7 years ago and always starts with no problems.

Thanks for the tips. I'll just keep playing with it until I can get it to fit between the block and steering column.
