Gear oil?

What transmission oil should I use for my 58 Sprite and should I fill it up to the bottom thread of the oil filler area?

Thanks,

Michael

The original spec is ordinary 30W motor oil, but 20W-30 is OK too. DO NOT use gear oil!

Fill it to the bottom of the filler hole on the left side.

All this is in any shop manual. It would be a good idea at least to get the Haynes manual (maybe $15 on eBay) and the Bentley, which is a reprint of the original shop manual.

Which ever weight oil you're using in the engine, depending upon YOUR preferences and ambient temperature is what's right for the gear box. the "book" says... well the book lists brands and kinds of oil that are no longer available,... Duckman's, Sternol, Filtrate, Esso, .. .. as well as Castrol, BP and Shell, the jist of it is 20w/50 down to 41 degrees F, 20w/30 down to 10 degrees F and 10W below that temperature.

Thanks guys. I was a bit confused because my Haynes book stated "Duckhams". I'm kind of new at this British car stuff and wasn't sure if I needed a special manufacturer.
Thanks again,

Mike

Mike,

Duckhams is a big brand name in the ancestrial home of our little drippers.
Esso is a European subsidiary of EXXON-Mobil.
I don't know if Filtrate and Sternal are around anymore.
When I lived in England back in the 70's I used to buy Duckhams by the 5 gallon container for my old Vauxhall.
