TR4/4A Gear lever plunger and spring

How important is it to have the plunger and plunger spring fitted to the hole in the bottom of the gear lever.
My gear lever did not have one fitted when I dismantled it..

It's there to prevent rattling. Functionally it has no affect on the box.

Thanks, I was aware of the "rattling" aspect of it.......if the gear lever end and the linkages are not unduly worn, I imagine that the plunger with spring would perhaps limit the smoothness of the cross over from the 1/2 gear linkage to the 3/4 linkage.

Would be willing to bet 8 out of 10 TRs don't have the spring in them now. I find one once in while in a shifter but haven't had a rattling shifter in a TR. an MG, a whole different story

Yeah - you can shift a TR box with almost anything...

The first time I removed the shifter of a TR3 I had no idea the spring and "other " part were down there. I never did find the "other " part as it took off to that place all parts go to hide once they are free. It was a number of years later on another car that I finally found out that the "other " part is NOT a ball but rather more of a cylinder.
