Gear box woes

Well, it was a great day to change the oil. Did that and then decided to replace the gear box oil since it had been 3 years. The Moss catalog says 8.6 pints. I bought a pump to pump the MT90 in behind the radio. Sounded like a good idea to use a pump. I put in 3 Qts and decided to check with the dip stick. Said I was over by about a Qt. Thought I could just reverse the pump and suck some out. Then the proverbial fan was hit. The 5 inch hose fell off and into the gear box. Took everything out and removed the top of the gear box and fished the hose out put it all back together. What a pain. So, exactly how much does the gear box hold? It now read right on with just two Qts. Am I missing something?

Did you drain the OD? They share the same oil, but maybe you didn't drain it all.

No, I couldn't get the plug with the square hole out. I removed the large one with the basket and magnets. That is probably the problem. I have a square block that fits the differential but the plug isn't deep enough in the overdrive.

:savewave:

Yep!!, The almost 2 QTS that was in the box when you first started to fill it.

Nominally the box holds 4 US QTS---Keoke

P.S. Use a3/8" socet wrench should fit the plug.

You drained the OD but not the gearbox (the small plug mentioned above)

TH, what a story! I smiled reading that, in a good way of course. That stuff happens. Well to you, not the rest of us. We never have anything like that happen. We never drop our tools, things always fit perfectly the first time and if we loose a nut, bolt, washer, it usually drops into our free hand that just happens to be where the part falls.

Anyway, sorry to hear about what happened. I, we, know how much work it is to remove all the parts to get to the transmission cover plate.

Keep up the good work.

The plug on my transmission is the same as on the differential - 7/16". :confuse:

My "tool" wouldn't go into the differential plug far enough last week. I found some wood in the plug from the wood blocks that I use between the differential and jack when lifting the rear end. Maybe you have a rock or something stuck in the plug.

That plug is hard to get off the first time, but is necessary to completely drain. First, remove any paint around the plug. Soak with PB blaster or liquid wrench etc. Heat with heat gun, then insert wrench with a flat bladed screwdriver along side of the wrench (takes two hands) then turn.

Worked for me...

Yes Roger TH's escapade with the catheter did give me a private moment of amusement too.---Keoke-

Always happy to be of service. As my chiropractor says, "your pain is my gain".

TH, next time your Chiropractor asks how your back is, tell him the pain is now gone, being he removed the weight in your back pocket, your wallet.
