Gear Box/Stick Problems

Drove the BJ7 last night, however, while driving into the garage and changing from reverse into first gear, the gear stick jumped in my hand and is now disconnected from the gear box itself. The gear stick is unable to change gear and is moving freely without any tension. Any suggestions? Thanks.

HI, I think that you have improperly reinstalled the gear lever short of its pivot breaking off which is not common at all.---Fwiw---Keoke??

It has been awhile but this happened to my BJ8 and as I recall there are two small pins of some sort that hold the lever in place (located where the ball is inserted/ Believe you might have to remove a circlip to get at this area. But as I recall it was a pretty easy fix. Also think maybe one of the pins was worn so just put in a small bolt in it's place.

Hi Ron, Yes those rollpins are a possibility.Additionally, the speed change lever socket contains a two piece bush held together by a circlip or a one piece plastic one,if this bush did not reseat or is broken it will allow the lever to flop about a bit.It is suggested that the tranny top cover be removed and a good inspection of the lever's operating components be made. ---Fwiw--Keoke

I had the same thing happen to my BJ8 this past spring. I took the boot from the shifter off, and backed out the two threaded screws that hold the lever in place, removed the circlip and spring and reinstalled/replaced all. No problems since. You need to make sure that you put the ball of the shift lever into the reciever of the shifter fork on the tranny also.
