Gauge lights

Thanks to everyone in this forum for being so helpful to folks like myself who have just purchased a new British "toy car" and have many questions to ask!
My gauge lights do not work and I have changed fuses but the brightness knob on the left hand side of the dash appears to have been stuck for years and won't turn at all. I tried a little WD-40 (as is my nature to try) and it still won't budge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hmmm, lbc's are supposed to have dash lights? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Aloha TNMGB,

Since the motto at the Lucas works is, "Put in a good days work and home before dark." Perhaps they are working as designed.

On the other hand, a quick check would be to jump over the dimmer switch with a short piece of wire to see if the lights work. If they do, you have determined the switch is either faulty or stuck in the off or dimmest position. If they still don't work, I would suggest the next thing to check are ground connections. In most cases the bulb holder makes a path to ground by metal to metal contact with the gauge/instrument metal housing. Removing the bulb holder and reinserting them often will fix the ground.

Good luck with your new "toy".

Safety Fast,
Dave

Thanks, Dave! When I get some time I'll give that a try and see what I can come up with!

Hehe. My dash is well-lit. When I hold a flashlight in between my knees aimed at the tach. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Dash lights

It's very common for the dimmer switch to fail in later cars. New dimmers are crazy expensive,$70, so most folks just by pass them.

Giday guys.

In aus, ive found pretty much every B that ive come across has had the dimmer bypassed. Apparently its of poor quality and does nothing but dim the lights further than DIM!

(The whole time i've had my car it has been bypassed)

Might be a good idea to bypass it and have it running at FULL to make sure u can actually see whats going on... :p

the dimmer supplied by lucas, the maker of terrible electrics does and will go bad rather quickly., just bypass the dimmer or look on ebay for replacement, new ones are crazy in cost $70.00 or better. If you still want a new one see victoria british or moss catalogs. good luck.
