Gauge Face Coating after Cleaning?

I cannot remember which forum on this board where the topic was discussed but somewhere I remember a discussion about what to apply to the face of Smiths gauges after cleaning to prevent the white lettering from continuing to flake off.

I seem to remember that someone on the board suggested using something like hair spray. Does anyone remember what was suggested or have other suggestions for a protective coating that would restore that nice satin finish without causing the lettering to be damaged?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I have no experience in this. But, I think I will use a satin ceramic clear spray from hobby lobby. I don't see why a couple dry coats would cause any issues.

Warning ....this is purely conjecture at this point as I have not tried it yet.
