New problem. Strong odor of gasoline in garage where TR6 is parked. No dripping or leaks visible. Tank was recently filled but filler cap seems tight. Can't seem to trace smell. Any ideas?

Check all of your fuel line connections, especially filter, fuel pump and carbs and tank.

Some TR-6 models had a charcoal canister and the fuel system was sealed, e.g. no venting. Could be this system needs service.

It is not uncommon for small pin hole leaks to develop in the gas tank, especially where it sits on top of the ledge in front of the boot. These leaks start with rust due to trapped moisture. You can easily inspect the possibility of a leak by removing the mill board cover behind the tank (inside the boot).

There is a small length of rubber hose which connects the fuel cap outlet to the tank. Make sure that the rubber has not deteriorated and started to leak.

I'm sure others will have additional suggestions.

Check the bottom of the carbs for dampness.
Also, smell the oil on your dipstick for gas.
If ok there, open the boot and see if it smells bad near the bottom of the gas tank.

On the TR4a it started to smell after fill ups. The seal for the fuel gauge sender wasn't doing its job - allowing gasoline to exit the tank and run down the side. Pretty strong odor when first entering into the garage even though the amount leaving the tank was really small.

Checked the car carefully. No leaks noted. I'll run the car to burn off some fuel and see if the situation improves.

We're relatively new owners of a 72 TR6. 1st thing we after getting it did was fill it up. The next morning the odor in the garage was terrible. I traced it to the tank, a tell-tale moist trail helped but only after I spent an hour or so under the car and in the engine bay looking for a leak. The 'trail' wasn't easy to see. Only with plenty of light and looking from different angles did I spot it. For now we don't fill the tank more than 3/4 full and that has solved the stinking garage issue. When 'top down' season ends I'll pull the tank and give a shot at etching/sealing.
