Gasket sealants for thermostat housing?

I flushed the cooling system yesterday and now replacing the thermostat. The two-part housing had what seems like different kinds of gasket sealants on them and was wondering what the preferred method of joining these surfaces was now. Through the years, I've seen silicone sealants, "form a gasket", no sealant at all recommended at times.

I used the reguar gasket with a coating of PermaTex's HPF Gasket Dressing and Sealer. That way there the gasket should never get stuck. Knock on Wood.
