When I took my gas tank to change the sending unit, I couldn't figure out why the previous owner sealed up around the top of the tank with caulking. Today I found out. I filled the tank (for the first time) and all was well until I topped it off. Gasoline poured out over the top of the tank.
Part of it may have been that I didn't seal the sending unit well enough, but why else would he have caulked around the tank?
Anyhow, I completely drained it and washed it out with a water hose. I think I got all of the loose dirt out.
The tank had thick black paint on it and the right rear corner of it has a layer of fiberglass. Why would he have done that? To stop up a leak or for some other reason?
What's the best way to prepare a gas tank?
Any and all advice is most welcome.
Thanks as always.
