Gas tank sending unit float...doesn't float

While I had Dolly Clementine jacked up on the right side to get under her to R&R the speedometer cable, I decided to check out why the gas gauge didn't work. The sending unit is not working...it shows empty all the time and when I grouded the feed wire, the guage indcated full. The tank and sending unit were new from Moss a few years ago, so I pulled it off while it was tilted and checked it out. The float was filled with gas...it has a slight crack in it where the arm attaches and took all day to drain out. Testing with an ohm meter showed that the sending unit was good, so I guess the float that doesn't is the problem.

Moss shows the float available with the sending unit only...does anyone know where I can get just a float? or perhaps suggest a way to seal up the float to keep it from filling up with gas and floating. It would have to be some space age material to hold up submerged in the gas tank. I really don't want to shell out $30 for the whole sending unit.

Thanks,
Bruce

It's a maddening problem. Stoopid float should be available for a dollar.

I've dipped 'em in fiberglass resin in past but it seems ethanol eventually melts that. How 'bout substituting CORK?!

Weldwood plastic resin glue. FAA certified, impervious to gasoline.
About $10 for the smallest size. It's a powder.

Might as well just buy a new one.

Just recently had to replace my sending unit - it did not check out on the ohm meter. But I thought sure that I also saw a float listed in Moss. Matbe British Vistoria.

Whose part number is that, Tony?

I couldn't find it on Moss (US and UK), Vicky Brit, or MGOC Spares.

Gordon at BHive sells the plastic float only. Also, the float for an older Ford F-150 fits perfectly (and it's brass). I posted the part number, pic and price over on MG Experience awhile back. Looks like Skye's forums are down right now, or I'd post the info. I'll try to post back here w/ the info later.

Paul

Edit: The Ford part # is COAZ-9202-B. Seems like I paid ~$10. Note that It worked in my '74. Not sure what you have. Good Luck.

Moss number....its for the float only

Tony - It's strange that number doesn't show up on the Moss site, yet when I enter it at LBCarCo (which uses Moss part #s) it appears.

Its in the Moss wholesale catalog.....

Well, I send Tony an email adding it to the list, along with the speedometer cable and a new hubcap...I hope to get this and a few other things done in time to enjoy this fall weather we are having :driving:

Got it, Bruce...just got Home form daughter's...will work your request tonight....
