I have a new gasket purchased from Moss to go under the gas tank. The gasket is tapered. Does the thick side go towards the front or rear of the car? Also the retaining straps had some kind of hard board strips attached with split rivets to separate the strap from the tank. Any ideas about what to replace this with. I was thinking about using some thick gasket material and bonding it to the straps with gasket cement.

The thick edge goes towards the bulkhead (front of boot). If the gasket has a taper on the edge the flat side goes against the boot floor. At least, that's how I did it and it worked out OK. I used some 1/8" rubber sheet and pop rivets to line the straps (the original material was held with copper split rivets IIRC).

I just tried to instal the gas tank with the thick side of the gasket toward the bulkhead as described above. Leaves the outlet fitting about 1/2" to high too line up with the existing hole through the bulkhead. Too bad I didn't save the original gasket, it must have been a flat gasket. Is there a source for a non-tapered gasket. If not some kind of foam weather stripping might work.

Try a heat gun around the perimeter of the gasket,from the bottom, with the straps on as tight as you can get them.The heat will compress the gasket, this worked for me as I had the same problem as you Rich , don't use anything with a flame, Good luck, Bob
