Topped off my fuel tank. Later noticed a puddle by rear wheel driver's side. What connects the fuel take neck to the fuel lines? Assuming my overfill had an effect there. Or do I need a new fuel tank?

When I don't top off, no smell, no puddle.

Perhaps there is a leak:

1] At the Rubber hose connection between the metal filler tube and the tank.

Do not top up until you locate the problem, as on a warm day a more significantly dangerous leak might occur.--Keoke

Almost Definitely, but there is no over flow 'cept the hole into which the fuel goes.

There is one more possibility - a leak high up on the tank or the stub filler tube.

I have a similar problem. - no leak but a strong smell in the trunk - note to self - get that rubber changed.

Hi Eric, I had a similar problem when I filled all the way up. Once at a car show on a hot day the fuel just "bubbled" up and out the filler cap. Some said a bubble had formed in the tank and pushed the fuel out, others said I had too tight a gasket on the filler cap which didn't allow air in.

Hope this helps, all I did was replace the gas cap gasket and never had a problem.
 
Hi Johnny this is standard procedure
The fuel just expanded due to the heat and not having an overflow it exits out the top of the filler tube. This can sure ruin a paint job BOY!!>--Keoke

Fuel pump on driver's side and no leak there. Need to put the car on a lift to check out fully. Will do shortly.
 
Found the problem. It's the fuel sending unit, easily one of the weakest links in the Big Healey design. When overfill, the fuel leaches back up the sending unit and finds the best path to ground. Will toss the meaningless rubber gasket and find another unit which undoubtedly will have a plastic float that will leak gas and require replacement in short order. I'm told a cork gasket is best although I've read threads on this site to the contrary. But there doesn't seem to be anything out there that isn't a short term fix. Really annoying.

There is a rubberized version of the old cork casket that should resolve your problem . The material can be bought in bulk cheaply and you can cut your own.__Keoke--- :laugh:
