Gas Guage Sending Unit revisited

As a follow-up to my original post, the fuel guage has returned from being serviced (recalibration) - never noticed before that the color of the face is silver tone unlike the other guages on this Healey which are gold tone -with suggested ground leads attached, is still behaving the same and not functioning correctly.

Question: Is there supposed to be a correct orientation for the fuel sending unit? Should the lead face forward or to the back of the car? I suspect that the float arm is grounding on the tank resulting in erratic readings.

First attempt was to attach this post to related one - My apologies . Look forward to any suggestions. Thanks GONZO
 
The sending unit design is not highly reliable. Check that you have good continuity through the pivot shaft to the body of the sending unit. Corrosion often causes an open circuit at that point. You should be able to see a smooth resistance change(Ohms)as the float arm is stroked full travel. It doesn't matter if the float touches the tank.
 
Thanks Stretch for the reply. Tank is "FULL" and gauge is pegged beyond "FULL" mark. Removed sending unit, grounded it again, actuated the float arm to verify it and the gauge were functioning. Installed sending unit and found a better ground for the grounded lead.

That was 7AM this morning just before my Wife located me in the garage to ask me to accompany her on a 3 hr hike in the foothills. But of course, today's temperatures were going to be only 95F+. The things we do for love. Guess I'll have to wait to test the fuel gauge. GO GO GONZO!
