Gas Filter or what?

I am trying to identify this filter attached to my line just after the pump, which is aftermarket. I can't load a picture I took (not technically adept enough to get it under 120K) so I will try to describe it...

it is about six inches long and 2 inches in diameter, has banjo fitting on either end, two arrow pointing the way of the flow and is engraved as follows:

"Bosch" then "957" in an oval
"made in Spain"
"0450905021"
"642"

Can anyone tell me if it is just a filter or does it control the pressure too?

I have a good picture I can email to anyone who has any ideas!

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce,

I am going to say it is just a fuel filter part number 0405905021. (I googled bosch fuel filters and found some with this part number. Well, I did not find the one ending with 021, but did find others that began with the same eight numbers as you describe) Not sure why it is by the fuel pump. Do you have a fuel filter on the fire wall? The "usual" MGB fuel filter it there just in front of the driver and is about 3 7/8 inches by 2 inches. At least that is the way it is on our 78 MGB.

I am also assuming that you have a SU fuel pump in the boot.

Hope this helps and don't do anything until someone else concurs with my assumption. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Thanks...I could not find the numbers in my search /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I do have an inline filter in the engine compartment, too. I think as soon a it gets warm enough to open the garage doors (it is parked right next to the furnace) I will pull it and see what is what.

Thanks a lot for your help

You are welcome. There appears to be several others that have lurked your thread and no one has said we were wrong, so...

YES, I would agree that poppin' that baby off next to a lit furnance would not be the smart thing to do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Let me know what you think when you do remove it from the system.

Anybody know why this was done?

I keep my filters by the pump as do many other people I know. It does no harm there and is easier to change. No gasoline spilling in the engine bay to ruin paint or ignite on hot pipes. I used to keep the filter in my B in the engine bay and one day it cracked which allowed gasoline to spray on the exhaust manifold. The car nearly caught on fire. Never again!

Bruce, that is either a gas filter or an empty soda can. There would be no other reason for a canister like that in the fuel line.

My car does have a nice filter mounted on the dirver's side fender in the engine compartment, so this this is redundant. It kinks the hose, bounces off the springs (which I am currently replacing for those of you who noticed them not there in the picture) and is a leak waiting to happen.

The pump is an aftermarket pump which made me wonder about this set up to begin with. It is just visable at the top of the picture, behind the fender. Just to the left of it are two ends of a clear plastic hose that I don't know what it is either...one end goes to a T-fitting in the boot and the other end goes through a gromet into the frame. It appears to be some sort of vent hose which is not hooked up to anything...any ideas?

Thanks to all!

Bruce

Guinn,
Thanks, but the boys are both home from college for the weekend and have offered to teach the old man how to work the puter too!

Happy Easter All!
