gas analyser CHEAP on eBay

For those of you who might be wanting to bring their home or commercial shop to the next level, here are two posts that I made on another board concerning a gas analyser that is on eBay.

Post One:

This is a duplicate of my machine less another part that most LBCers won't need anyway. Bullet proof and accurate. If you are out west and want to drive a little this will make up for the hassle of getting it right quick. LOL

Super cheap at this point, with a day plus 21 hours left on the auction.

Post Two: (in response to a couple of comments)

Gas analysers, two, four and five gas units, aren't necessarily used for "testing" for state emissions. They are though, "the icing on the cake" for engine tuning.

IMHO there is no other way to get a perfect knife edge tune without LOTS of dyno time in experimentation, and even then a good dyno session is going to include concurrent emissions testing. Tuning "by ear" may result in reasonably good performance but I have never encountered a fresh tune, one of mine or otherwise, having been done by ear, that when put on a machine couldn't be significantly improved upon. In fact my normal procedure is to do just that, tune the lump as closely as possible in a very methodical way and THEN do final tweaks with the aid of the scope and analyser.

If this thing goes for anything less than four times it's present bid price, $99, it will be a genuine steal. There are more than a few other infra red machines on eBay at the moment and some are really good buys, but this one offers the benefits of not only the infra-red analysis but a full range oscilloscope to boot. It is also about the smallest console format that I have seen that includes all of its capabilities.

I bought mine from a retired Sun engineer who is now in the automotive consultation business partnered with the guy that headed up the unit's design and development team for Sun. I have also located a service facility for them that can supply any expendables, like filters, and can do service/repairs as may be needed.

Shipping shouldn't be a problem. All you have to do is unbolt the top section from the lower cart, disconnect a few leads, and run it through FedEx ground in two cartons.

I use the LM-1 and am very happy w/ it.

For a hundred bucks I'd buy it, but I have no room and it's a bit far from me. And then I'd have to learn to use the thing, too!

I'm not sure it's really worth it for carburettors: I've tuned a few engines using Colourtune and listening to rise and fall in revs. Two of these I had tested on a rolling road afterwards: both had the mixture spot-on, and just needed a slight timing tweak.

It really is possible to get good results with cheaper kit, if you're methodical and patient.
