I need to know I'm not alone. I restoring my Bugeye and its on a rotisiery so it can have multiple flat surfaces. As soon as one comes available I think every tool I own is quickly on it. Then when I need to rotate it I just take the tools and redistribute them to whatever flat surface is close by. Then it starts all over again.

I asking this this because it's raining, I ran out of mig gas and I need a new belt on my compressor so I can't do any work. This means I really should go out to the garage and clean everything and put things back where they belong.

Thanks for listening.

Guilty your honour.

And, while every tool is on it (and currently not just car tools, house tools, kitchen cabinets for apartment project, and ????

while every tool is on it, I still can't find the tool I need!

I clean and organize my garage about once a year. Each time I swear I'm going to keep it organized. It never lasts more than a couple of months at best.

I have multiple workbenches. There are sections of each that always have stuff piled on them. During a project (major or minor) the remaining surfaces collect all forms of tools and parts. Every few months I take a day and go through as much of the junk as possible putting things away and throwing things out. It's difficult to NOT pile things on the benches.

Don't feel bad:

Guilty, actually I am pretty good with my tools they all have a place and are generally kept there. But there is a huge accumulation of parts and scraps I can't seem to keep ahead of. One work bench surface, about 10' x 3', always seems to be covered up. I am good about getting projects done. Not so good about cleaning up as I go or even after.

Growing up with a professional mechanic for a father, I tend to keep my tool box tidy and organized, and my tools clean and put away where they belong. I do, as I believe most people do, keep a large assortment of useful bits and pieces laying about. Unless something is broken and useless I don't tend to throw it away I just put it into a jar, can, or box for future use.

I have a what I call the job cart
the job home base centers around the cart
then when done it's wheeled over to the tool box and emptyed
it sort of forces you to put away they after math of the day
thus making it easy to find all my tools and put them in there proper places.
now if I could just find the cart.....

Rebuilding cars, rebuilding old tractors I have the theory that, I might use that someday! Needless to say, things like that have a tendency to accumulate. For the past two years I've been cleaning out my shop, well, some things I still might need someday, so I'm very choosy as you can gather. :encouragement: :highly_amused:. PJ

My wife says my shop is unorganized, which is not true, as I know where everything is at! :wink-new:

& down the road, when you find that "thing" you've been looking for .....well now, that is a feeling of accomplishment.

Yeh... but tonight I was in the attic above the garage looking for some air line fittings and I found a whole bunch of air hose quick connects. I'd forgotten I had them and have twice purchased more. Sometimes I think I store too much stuff. I don't even remember to look for that "thing I've been looking for".

I'm pretty guilty of buying extra sets of tools that I've forgotten I already own, or can't find. That said. I don't currently have a garage. The yard isnt the best place for them, but some tools are there. Most others in plastic bins around the house. We recently inherited a nice shop, and when we get everything put over there maybe (but doubtful) I can organize my stuff.

You mean were SUPPOSE to put them back? Hmmm, what a novel concept.:wink-new:

I am one of those guys that tends to save everything too, while I don't necessarily like the clutter, but one thing I absolutely hate buying something I threw away some time in the past.

Me too but, I hate even more buying something I know I have but can't find or alternately know that the the only way I will ever be able to find it is to buy a new one.

And then there are certainly cosmic realities like - No matter how many tape measures I have, I can only ever find one at a time.

And why is it the tool I'm looking for always turns up at the *end* of my search???? Jeez - couldn't it at least turn up in the *middle* of the search?

I learned to put tools away after every job, when I worked professionally on vehicles. That way you knew what might have been left in the car you were working on. I have the carts, use them sparingly, too easy to leave on cart. I remember hearing a tool fall as I test drove a finished car, with the cost of tools learned rather quickly.

I have over 50 years of accumulated nuts, bolts, odd metal pieces, tools, tap and die sets, a ring compressor, etc. Every so often, I actually find a use for something. Like the caged nut that I used to fix the hold-down for the wooden panel in the trunk. Where it came from I have no idea. When I finally move, it's going to be a nightmare.

After you find it, just keep lookin'.

For that piece of wisdom, I'll only charge you $5 Tom.

Sometimes I do keep looking because I've forgotten what I was looking for!
