Let's see, my pharmacy (CVS) offers in store pickup of prescriptions, or CVS Caremark delivery by mail. I think I'll choose delivery by mail.

My email to Caremark Customer Service: Dear Caremark - please change my prescriptions from in-store, to mail order delivery.

Here's the reply to my email. I kid you not.

* * * * *

Thank you for contacting CVS Caremark. We strive to provide quality customer care to every one of our plan participants.

According to our records, your current prescriptions are being filled at a retail CVS, but are viewable from Caremark.com.

In order to fill your medication through the Caremark home Delivery Pharmacy, we would need to have the prescriptions at our pharmacy. The quickest way to fill at our home delivery pharmacy is to have brand new, 90 day supply prescriptions sent to us, with refills as applicable.

When using the home delivery service, please remind your physician to write your prescription for a 90-day supply to receive the maximum benefit allowed under your plan. We are required to fill your prescription for the exact quantity written, but not to exceed the day supply limit set by your plan. A prescription written for a 30 day supply with two refills does not equal one prescription written for 90 days.

In order for CVS Caremark to dispense the full 90 day supply in one prescription, please have your physician write the total quantity you will need for the 90 day supply (i.e., #90, take one tablet daily). For most medications, a maximum of three refills is permitted on a 90-day prescription.

Here are 5 easy ways to order a new prescription from CVS Caremark Home Delivery:

1. Request a New Prescription via Caremark.com
Log on to Caremark.com and click on Prescriptions from the top menu, then click on Start Rx with CVS Caremark Mail. Fill out the form with your information, and we will contact your physician for a new prescription. This program is available for common, long-term medications, such as those taken for chronic conditions or long-term therapy. Certain medicines, such as controlled substances, specialty drugs and others are not available.

(note - there is no Start Rx with Caremark Mail choice on that page)

2. Ask your physician to call us
Your physician can call in a prescription to the CVS Caremark Home Delivery Pharmacy toll-free at 1-800-378-5697 (option 3), or by fax at 1-800-378-0323.

(note - calling physician only allows leaving a message. Ever try leaving detailed instructions in a phone message? Assistant calls and says the message will be forwarded to physician. Physician says my prescription still has 30 days, so call after prescription has run out.)

3. Request a New Prescription via email
If you would like CVS Caremark to contact your physician for the prescription, you have the option to email the information below. Please note that this process cannot be used to contact physicians to obtain prescriptions for Schedule II controlled substances.

Member Name:
DOB:
Shipping Address:
Requested By (Name and Relationship):
Physician’s Full Name:
Physician’s Address:
Physician’s Phone Number:
Physician’s Fax Number:
Drug Name:
Drug Strength:
Dosage Form:

(note - there is no email address given for contacting Caremark)

4. Mail in your prescription
Attach a written prescription from your physician for a 90 day supply (with refills if appropriate), to a completed home delivery order form, and mail it to the address on the form or to the following:

CVS Caremark
P.O. Box 2110
Pittsburgh, PA 15230-2110

(note - there is no home delivery order form to complete. And you have to schedule an appt with the physician to get a written prescription)

5. To have your physician submit an electronic prescription (ePrescription) advise the physician, for ePrescriptions only, they should select:

CVS Caremark MAILORDER Pharmacy
One Great Valley Blvd
Wilkes-Barre, PA 18706
Phone: (877) 864-7744
Fax: (800) 378-0323
Pharmacy NABP or NCPDP#: 0322038

To have your physician submit an electronic fax prescription (eFax) advise the physician, for eFax only, they should select:

CVS Caremark Mail Order FAX Only
7034 Alamo Downs Parkway
San Antonio, TX 78238
Phone: (877) 864-7744
Fax: (800) 378-0323
Pharmacy NABP or NCPDP#: 4583034

Note: The phone and fax numbers are the same for eFaxes and ePrescriptions; the NABP/NCPDP numbers are different.

If your physician should have any problems, advise them to contact their software vendor support for assistance with finding the correct listing within the SureScripts directory. (say what?)

Should you need additional assistance, please respond to this e-mail. We appreciate the opportunity to serve all of your prescription benefit needs and to help you better manage your health.

(note - this is almost laughable, except for homebound people whose lives depend on home delivery.)

Regards,

CVS Caremark

I’ve heard good things about the Amazon pharmacy.

I’ve heard good things about the Amazon pharmacy.
I cancelled my Amazon Prime membership and don't buy anything from Amazon.
They are connected to DHS as are Home Depot and Lowe's.

We've been using Optum Rx for years with little to no issues. Subscribe to their automatic renewal on some of our meds.

Of course, now that I've said that, I imagine I've activated the gremlins...

Mickey - I'd do that too, but there are lots of confounding hoops to jump through to get my doctors to send the prescriptions through the Optum enrollment labyrinth. Similar to the Caremark system.

Like Basil, I also love my Amazon Prime, plus my 10% Veterans discount at Lowe's and Home Depot!

Thanks Paul - do you use a prescription mail delivery service?

Tom, we have Aetna medical and use CVS home delivery. Once in a while, the system will get a quirk in it, but a phone call usually straightens it out.

I too love Amazon Prime and I support Davidson High School.

As a kidney transplant patient I'm reliant on a number of "forever drugs"..."Anti-rejection drugs (immunosuppressants) are essential, lifelong medications for kidney transplant recipients to prevent the immune system from attacking the foreign organ." My online pharmacy, Express Scripts, is easy to deal with and provides flawless service.
And I'm with those that enjoy Amazon Prime and the military discounts provided by Lowes and Home Depot.

I have probably save many thousands of dollars from discounts over the years between Home Depot, Lowes, AutoZone, O'Reillys, and even some of my favorite bistros.

I use United Health Care. They have an online pharmacy call OptumRX. It has worked as well as anything in the medical system can be expected to work. You can either order on the website or have automatic refills. As far as the doctors are concerned, that is another story. In my opinion, the medical profession in the country is a joke. [Any guy in a white coat passes for a doctor these days]. Their computer system is weird too, but it works, sorta. As for ANYTHING Amazon ? I'll take a pass on them. ...J.D.

I've done some surveying here, on other sites and forums, and face to face with friends and colleagues. Summarizing the results:

The professionals (the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, etc.) are trying to do their jobs as well as possible, but are greatly hindered by all the corporate efforts to increase shareholder dividends and rein in expenditures, and they're struggling with staff cuts and increasing numbers of patients, plus with insurance company requirements. And the Rx by mail programs are struggling with that too - increased workloads with decreased staffing, plus automation leading to errors. We end users pay for all this.

Friday morning I went through three phone numbers and just under two dozen menu choices, plus a health insurance (find a doctor!) website, to finally reach someone to schedule a doctor appointment.. And that someone could barely speak and understand English, made worse by the crying baby in the background. I'm still relatively healthy, but imagine an elderly or disabled person living alone, trying to do this.

This is our medical system?

OK - back to my cave.
Tom M.

Tom,
I have been using some of my medical providers for over 30 years.
Now with AI, staffing cuts, etc. some are becoming unreachable.
On the brighter side, I needed a refill on my Rx at Walgreen's this weekend.
That's not the brighter side because both my phone app and my computer are no longer allowing me to login.
So I had to drive up to the local Walgreen's to ask for the refill.
I didn't expect any action until Monday.
What surprised me was, I got a message from my physicians office this morning (Sunday).
They just wanted me to confirm the request.
Now that is one of the reasons I have kept my physicians for 30+ years.

Feel sorry for the crummy situation you're in Tom.
I'm lucky to be connected to UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). Where my long-time primary physician correctly diagnosed my kidney disease, got me connected with a great nephrologist who treated me well during the failure process. Then was given first class compassionate service by the UPMC transplant team when I fell into stage 4, then 5 renal failure. Post transplant care has been most supportive and correctly monitored through the recovery phase (transplant was 15mos ago). This group of doctors, all under the UPMC umbrella, are responsible for why I'm still here.
Unfortunately (in your case) their 40 hospitals are only in Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland.

Now you've done it!

I use Express Scripts and it works fine. Express Scripts keeps trying to get my wife to use them, but she won't deal with online stuff, CVS is about a mile from our house, and her prescription costs are usually less than Express Scripts shipping cost, so we go to our local CVS.

Express Scripts doesn't charge me for shipping.
From their website..."How do you ship my medication?"
"Standard shipping is included as part of your plan. You can also choose next-day or two-day shipping for an extra fee when available. We’ll safely ship your medication in tamper-evident and discreet packaging without the pharmacy name. If your medication is sensitive to extreme hot or cold weather, we ship it in a temperature-controlled package."

We had Express Scripts under our health insurance plan (United), but they switched to Optum Rx. Had good experience with Express Scripts as well.

I get mailers all the time from Express Scripts. Our Rx is Costco and we shop there regularly enough that we rarely have an issue. I could see doing it if our Rx were further away or we didn’t already go there a lot. Definitely can see where it would be a good solution for many.
