Try the most unlikely places... like in the fridge.
Seriously, since it's a "hoop" (of sorts) look around for places you would have placed the ring without thinking about it. (i.e. On a pegboard hook, on a bolt that happens to be sticking out somewhere on the car, etc.) You probably intentionally put the ring somewhere so it wouldn't get lost.
