fuel tank removal

okay, I'm frustrated and stuck at the moment. with my tank there are (at least) two bolts that go through the boot that have to be removed before I can drop the tank.

the two bolts I'm fighting with have square nuts on the underside of the car which are supposed to be held in place by metal tangs (right word? the little fold over flaps).

obviously where I'm at now is that I don't have a socket that fits, vice grips are just spinning in place and I know that I can't grind off the bolts 'cuz I'll go boom.

tensions are high and my abilities are being questioned. help?

i just looked at mine, they do make 12 pt sockets. as a last resort i would grind the tops of the bolts off Inside the trunk.

okay, that would work. thank you. sorry for venting.. just wanted to get it done today. it's the frustration of being so close but not quite there yet.

I just ground the heads off the bolts to get mine out!

I used a liberal application of Rust Eater spray and used a small vise grips and adjustable pliers to hold the "tangs" ... I was eventually able to unthread the bolts. (assume you are having a time with the ones between the bumper and the tank?

yup. but, I figure I'll be using a new hardware kit if not a new tank altogether so I'll be pulling out the grinder when I get time to get back at it.
