New member here! I have owned my '69 Sprite since '95 and it has been stored since '99. Got it out of storage the other day and apparently the fuel pump (AUF 214) is not running. Should it run if I connect it to a 12 volt source. Should something happen or is it pressure or ?? I took it apart and cleaned the points but nothing when I tried a jumper from the battery.

I am running a SU pump and it will get spaztic at the points sometimes. They are set up snap action and should go thump thump etc.. on applying dc. Slows down alot when pressure gets up. Moisture causes it here. Liberal dose of WD usually gets it straight.
 
If it's out of the car, open it up and flick the points by hand to get em started.
Finicky little buggers but pretty much indestructable.
 
I'll ask the obvious question - are you <u>sure</u> you have 12V to it and a good ground? polarity right? (positive vs negative gnd)
 
I have it out of the car and touched the spade on the top of the pump to the positive battery terminal and then grounded out the neg lead. The car is neg ground. I get nuttin. Should I just purchase a small generic electric or look at rebuilding?

I would rebuild, but hay that is just me. Either option would work of course.

Have you opened it up yet to see if it is something dumb? Like points welded together?
 
Yes I did open it up. Points look ok I guess, I can mechanically get it to work and it pumps air out the outlet. Any good leads on inexpensive rebuilds or kits?
 
One solution may be to buy the Facet electric fuel pump.
About $40 USD at JC Whitney.

Be sure to buy the low-pressure unit (2 to 4 lbs of pressure) and you may be OK. In some applications, you may still need a pressure regulator to cut it down further (I think about 2 to 3 pounds of pressure is best for LBCs....I'm racing with 2.5 pounds)

A very reliable unit, but one note: these things are noisy!
 
I'm also running the facet pump, though it was rebadged as a NAPA product. Great little pump, been running it without issue for a year now, but Nial's right - it's a noisy little bugger!

How about the solid state ones from Victoria British? They seem to be the same price as having mine rebuilt but maybe more reliable.
 
related question: I just bought a non-polarized new electric SU fuel pump for my bugeye (I have a later model 1275 in there). I am running SU carbs.

Question, can I mount the fuel pump under the hood, near the carbs, as opposed to where they were mounted in the later model sprites which I believe was under and in the back near the tank? Is there going to be a problem with the push and pull pressures, or anything else? I would like to do this in the event everything in this thread (see above comments from everyone) happens....much easier getting to it.

It will also, I think, preserve it from road dirt and oil a touch better. But, this may not work mechanically speaking.

Mine under the hood and no real problems. Sacced the washer fluid container long ago for it.
 
It's really much easier on the pump if it is mounted close to the tank, and also below the tank center line (ideally below the tank altogether.

You can get away with a pump in the engine bay, mechanical pumps of course are always there, but they'll wear out faster and you'll be more likely to have vapor lock problems.
 
Just as an aside, I used the same mechanical pump for over 15 years, as daily transport, never a problem. they tough.
 
Mine is under the hood, and a bit below the SU's. No problem. Did have to increase to a higher PSI to get it to run right (7 or 8 if I remember right) vs. 4 or so many use here. It's a lot easier project.

Try mounting a piece of rubber underneath it -- the "click, click, click...." drive me crazy.

I use the external fule pump from a volvo 240. no problem.

I have been running some Autozone generic pump for about 10 years now with no issues, i just found one in the parts book that was roughly the same size and spec and Wired it in. It even sounds like the original pump. I think i payed about $30 for it (10 years ago)
