Fuel Pump Sounds like Chainsaw

Hello all,

Well...had a little incident again where the ignition just seemed to cut out on me. Figured it was the same thing as last time: condenser. So, bought a new one, installed, now know I definitely have to install a ballast resistor as well.

However...no luck. Car wouldn't start. What I noticed was the fuel pump sounded REALLY LOUD. Like someone was sticking a screwdriver into a grinding wheel or something like that. My gut tells me it shouldn't sound like that.

Now, my car is a mish-mash of Sprites. It's a '65, registered as a '62, with the engine from a '67/8. What am I looking at with this fuel pump deal? I haven't had a chance to get under there yet (just happened yesterday), but are all the fuel pumps similar? Should I rebuild it, or take it apart and just replace individual parts? Should I go for a Holley fuel pump instead?

What do you guys think?

It's gone. The fuel pump that is.
I recall a sound similar to a sawzall being beaten up by a melon, 3 seconds later, car dies. Fuel pump kaput.
depending on your setup re carbs etc would define what pump you'd need, but you'll never forget that sound as long as you live.

Fuel gauge says I got fuel back there, sounds like it when I rock the car back and forth.

So...if the fuel pump is gone, should I rebuild it or just get a new one?

It could be sucking air at the pump.
But you won't know until you look.
Get under the car and look to see if the fuel line is okay or does it have a crack(s) in it. While you are there pull the pump. If it is a factory pump (Lucas) it can be rebuilt from a kit. If it's one of the square Facuet pumps throw it away and buy a new pump of your choice. Just make sure it's a low pressure one , i.e., 1 to no more than 5lbs.

Ask for the 1980 MGB one. Is low pressure, Low price.
