Fuel Pump quit - so I smacked her on the rump

My trusty steed let me down for a little while today. She died at a stop sign after a rather brisk ride home from my buddy (Ausmhly)Roger's house - where I incidently was bragging this morning how incredibly well the car was running. Anyway, Roger suggested I smack her on the rump with a two pound lead hammer which I did and miraculously we were off to the races again. But now I'm a bit worried about an encore of this unwelcome behavior.

The question is, once the fuel pump quits like this, is it likely to continue to do so or even accelerate in frequency. Should I just bite the bullet and install an electronic fuel pump, maybe a dual unit for added assurance?
Thanks

Want a good deal on a slighty used one. What the hey, my car hasn't been driven in the last 19 months, and now I've got a water problem to tackle next. I'll even throw in a dead blow hammer, just in case. Thanks for your help today Randy. Roger

Just get some new points & a rebuild kit....Easy fix. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Those little things go forever with a bit of maintenance.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif If you put that 'lectric kind in...what would you do without that nagging feeling??? That anxious leaning of your ear towards the machinery? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I've been carring a set of new points for years having had an MG and Xk140. So I carry it and I figure if I am prepared I'm bullet proof. Only things I'm NOT prepared for will go wrong.

Had to give mine a tap the other day for the first time since replacing it with a new one a couple of years ago. It decided to strike whilst sitting in a traffic jam on a very hot day.

I'm sure it's not helped by the bazaar location right over the exhaust pipes. Has anybody tried moving them to a 'cooler' position or tried insulating them?

I took the 6 volt batterry out on the left side and put the fuel pump in that location. I installed an optima 12 volt battery in the stock location on the right side. Also I moved the batterry cutoff to just behind the passengers seat so i can access it from the drivers seat. All seemes to work out pretty well. ( 2 seater) Bob

Mu suggestion is to rebuild the original. Fairly easy to do or just buy a new one. Of course I like to keep things original. My 63 came with an electronic one and it just didn't look right to me. So I purchased a new SU from Moss. Mac

Hi Richard, Yes I have seen the pumps in the early 3000 cars moved to the front crossmember. However, it should not be rocket science to relocate it to some other cooler location.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Here’s a link to the eBay store of Brit Bits. They have a service center and sell cars. I bought one of the SU pumps, it came quickly and fit properly. (’66 BJ8) FWIW

Randy,

though most may have had bad experience with fuel pumps which once quit working, mine keeps up delivering the juice to the engine without missing one tick after it had stopped working about 2 years ago.

Then it was 'repaired' the usual way roadside.
