Fuel pump compression grommet

Hi all,
Just returned from white sand beaches in Florida to huge white snowdrifts at home.... oh well.
I have a new fuel pump ready to install when the glaciers retreat.
Quick question, while assembling input and outflow connections at the kitchen table, hand tight, I am looking at the brass grommets at each end. I assume they drop into respective line intake and outflow prior to tightening the line connector and because they are soft metal they create the seal when tightened.
Am I on the right track? I'm wary of over tightening and relying on the hose clamp to take up any pressure problems.

Thanks for the Florida hospitality!

Hello Winston,

Brass grommets or olives as they are commonly known compress onto the metal connection pipes and seal to that, and the body and nut of the pump being conical in shape. You do not need to use a lot of force to get them to seal. Once fitted they will be imovable on the steel pipe as they shrink tight onto them.

Also avoid over-tightening the thumb-nut on the bail that holds the glass bowl. Too much enthusiasm here will bend the part of the pump body that is the 'lid' of the bowl (i.e. if you get a leak around the rim of the bowl work on the gasket rather than cranking it tighter and tighter).

With a new gasket all may be fine. Used gaskets can get deformed and be difficult to reuse. I prefer to make my own from cork rather than use the rubber/vinyl version sometimes supplied with replacement pumps.
