Being I am new to the LBC's I am still trying to figure out what some of the components are my 79 B LTD. We started smelling fuel in the car. I finally got the trunk opened and find open fittings. There is one coming through the floor of and then there is canister mounted in the upper right corner with three fittings and they are all open. Can someone please tell me what the canister is and how the lines run?
 
The canister is a vapor separator meant to allow any liquid that condenses to flow back into the tank. This is part of the fuel tank vent, which is routed into the charcoal canister in the engine compartment. Someone may have detached all the lines to cure a tank venting problem. There is a union up in the fender well, above the wheel cover that has a nasty habit of rusting shut and blocking the vent for the tank. When this happens, a vacuum is formed in the tank as the car is run and will eventually starve the engine.

Remembering just how old the car is, if I were you, I would replace all rubber hoses in the fuel supply line to the engine. The braided hoses will deteriorate inside the braid over time and are not noticeable until they start to leak. I had this happen, fortunately it was on the suction side of the pump.

The vent for the tank should be capped and the gas cap modified so it vents to the atmosphere.

Ideally repair the stock vent system. It does nothing to affect performance and won't cost that much.
 
On a related note, I worry about what the ethanol in our modern gas will do to these old fuel lines. I've got major hesitation going on right now but I see no contaminates in the fuel filter just before the carbs. I'm planning on replacing both lines and filter and adding a filter at the back on the line coming off the fuel pump. I've only had the car for six months now so I really don't have a history to base my decisions on. :laugh:
