Fuel Gauge issues New member with a TR8

Happy to join this forum...........

I have a 1980 newly purchased TR8. Runs great and even the clock works But....no working fuel gauge. Ran out of gas over the weekend......... Can has been garaged but not run regularly for several years.(only 1000 miles per year)
My local mechanic tested the under car connections. He told me that I have 5 amps? at the fuel pump. Does that mean that it could be a loose conection at the pump, gauge or ground? Water in the float? Or is it somthing else?

Help,

Andy
