Fuel Additive for Removing Carbon

Gents:

Have any of you tried fuel additives for keeping your engines clean? I've heard Techron is about the best additive provided at the pump for this purpose and only use Chevron or Texaco gas in my BJ8. However, I've also heard great things about a couple of DIY additives, BG 44K, BG CF5 and Seafoam. BG 44K/CF5 is easier to use - just dump it in the gas tank once or twice a year. Seafoam costs less but sounds like more of a bother to use - put some in oil 100 miles before changing, some in gas and them "slurp" the rest into the intake with tubing while someone else keeps a foot on the gas. I just wonder what these products might do to our fuel pumps and other bits of the plumbing.

I use the Chevron Techron concentrate (available at most auto parts stores) 1-2 times a year in my BMWs, as recommended by BMWNA. I add it to a near empty gas tank while I'm at the station buying gas.

I have also used it in my Healey when I was embarking on tuning the Weber 45 DCOEs to accomodate its new home (higher elevation) a few years ago. Given the amount of miles I drive it a year, using Techron just once a season should be fine.

As I also use Stabil in the gas come fall, I wait until thank tankfull has run out (28 gallons, in my case) before doing the Techron.

One of my sons failed his emmissions test on an older GMC van and purcahsed a bottle of soemthing called "RXP", little pinkish bottle, added it to his tank, drove back to the inspection station and passed. Ed Wallace of "Wheels" radio talk show on Saturday mornings plugs this product and it evidently works quite well. It works so good that they usually keep the bottles behind the counter because thay are about $9 each and asre easy to "pocket".
