Frustrating

Being that I am the only income provider in my family, it is terribly frustrating when I hear that someone is stealing my work. I just found out that some guy is selling poor quality prints of my automotive illustrations at car shows in England. I guess I will have to resort to putting a big fat ugly watermark on all of the images on my website.

That does stink! I am very sensitive to people even posting copyright material here unless they own the material, or it is obviously "fair use." ANy chance you could contact this person and tell him to cease and desist?

Cliff! That really stinks!
That's what happens when you try to innocently share
with the rest of the world.
I hope you can stop him.

I've had the same thing happen with photos. I also have problems with people lifting images from my web site. Artists give me permission to display their work in exchange for a link to their site. Then someone comes along and lifts the image from my site and posts it elsewhere. I've had to start putting my site name on other people's images so at least if it's posted somewhere without permission, it might draw them back to my site where the artist gets credit, and hopefully a sale.

Cliff.
Imitation is the best form of flattery.
But in this case, it stinks
Hope you catch this guy and get him to quit
BTW, I admire your work

Sorry to here that Cliff. I think there are ways to keep people from downloading your image. Maybe Flash does that? Then the only way to grab the image is a print screen.

Cliff aren't there avenues you could pursue under international copyright law?
That really sucks that someone would steal your work.

Jeff/Cliff-

I had a professional design bootlegged to a foreign
country (by my own client no less) and used to construct
a new factory.

Other than being very ticked off, I found there was almost
nothing I could do about it.

By law, Cliff is entitled to the profit he would have made
had he sold the piece himself or thru a broker. Copyright
is civil law NOT criminal law. Legal fees to go after
scumbags quickly exceed the profits lost. Sometimes
threatening letters from lawyers might work.

Other A/E firms sometime bootleg my work. I work in
AutoCad and sign each detail down on the microscopic
level with my name. A professional can lose their license
by bootleging other professional's works. Artists do not have this available.

Me? I'd track the SOB down, fly to England and confront
the SOB and demand $$$, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cowboy.gif

And why do you think we are often referred to as "STARVING artists"? People who wouldn't steal a loaf of bread think nothing of stealing artists ideas and images!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

Cliff:

I am really really PO'd. This is ridiculous, seriously lets head up a posey and find this vermint. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cowboy.gif

If their is anything I can do let me know.

YUP! That's the only way anymore. If someone is selling prints you can be sure someone is using them on websites, selling them as stock images, and all kinds of other things.

They don't have to be big and ugly, you can fade them into the background really easily. I made a variety of watermarks with different densities, some white, some black - all done in photoshop. This is what I came up with:

Send him a Chinese Maxtor hardrive filled with your work. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Scott,
When I right click on your image it allows me to "save picture as"..... I have seen pictures on the web where when you right click the image it will not allow you to Save as...if you are determined you can screen print it and then save it but it really seems to lose quality. How do you block the user from save as?

Print screen works perfectly and there is no way to prevent it. Even the best watermarks will also be defeated if the person is determined enough. It's an unfortunate consequence of the digital age.

Unfortunately, this is the all too real scenario. You do have to track this guy down and at least make him aware that you are on his case. As Dale says, threatening letters from lawyers and persistenance on your part should shut his operation down. I'm sure that there isn't a chance to recoupe any money from his prior sales, but if you can stop him from further infringement, that will be a minor victory.
