Frozen E-Brake

I believe the e-brake is frozen closed on a 74 Midget. Any suggestions on freeing it up. The left wheel spins freely, but the right doesn't.

I would guess that it is the wheel cylinder and not the emergency brake, unless one of your shoes came apart or otherwise slipped out of place.
Have you taken the drum off yet?

You definitely need to pull the drum. You will probably need to back the adjuster out all of the way since the brake is locked. Then you will be able to tell why it is binding. The e-brake should go down and remove tension of the linkage along the back axle. If that linkage still has tension, then that could be part of your problem.

Are the brake cable and linkages across the axle loose?
If not, take out one or more of the clevis pins so that you're sure the brake isn't being pulled on.

Next, is the lever that goes into the wheel cylinder now loose and can you move the cylinder back and forth.

If not it's likely to be the shoes stuck to the drum.
If the engine runs, try driving off and see if it releases, or put it in gear and rock the car.

If still no luck, get the drum off. If the shoes are stuck to the drum, this can be hard work. Try hitting the drum with a heavy, but soft hammer (or a lump of wood).
If you pull the drum off (may well need puller) you may bend the shoes, but if it's stuck togethr badly you're going to be replacing them anyway.

Thought I would mention to NOT use penetrating oil to free the shoes except as a last resort. The penetrating oil will ruin the rubber brake parts (dust boot and seals) for sure, and you don't want it contaminating the rest of the brake hydraulics.

12 years! i assure you there will be plenty more things acting up! check your clutch as its probably stuck also...
ive been working on mine for days (74 also)..you might wanna do a full restore as you will be repairing everything anyhow from my experience..; ).. good luck...........zimmy
