Front wheel bearings

As an aside, does anyone think the assemblers at the plant went 'by the book?

IF they did not learn during the day time they were sent to night apprentice school where they were conditioned,---Keoke--
My guess is, that there was a room full of women working at benches, and they're the ones that built up the A-arm, kingpin/stub-axle and (front) wheel bearing/hub assemblies.

Perhaps they used go/no-go fixtures, and set the clearances up on all the loose parts, supplying ready to be installed assemblies to the boys on the line.

Anybody able to substantiate, or disprove the above?

NAA Randy that was at "BMW"--Keoke--

I got the new bearings, oil seals, shims and even a new digital micrometer. I'm ready to give it a shot. Betwene the manual and all your input I'm as ready as I can be. The only thing I think I have a seriouse lack of is confidence.I'll keep you posted and check back in if'n I get stuck.

Bad news, I ordered 2 front wheel bearing kits part # 5-917 at 16.95 each. I needed to order 5-916 at 49.95 each. Boy am I mad at myself. Now I get to frett over this crap for another two weeks till I staighten out my blunder. What a rookie move.

An old man told me once, "Elrey!" he said, "Thats just the way it is, an if you think different, somebody must a done learn't you wrong." Yep, just part of the process. Seems like this car is lucky it's got you for a friend. --elrey

Getting paid on the first and gonna order the carrct bearings this time along with a bunch of assorted shims. Still totally terrified that I'll screw it up and not get the end float set just right.

Relax. It's not rocket science. Plus there are these experts here like Keoke, Randy and the rest, who enjoy helping the rest of us. Thank goodness. And not to forget Basil and his realized vision. --elrey

I got the new bearings in. I used a micrometer and dial indicator. The end float is .003 on both sides. It feels good,I hope it's good enough because I used every shim I had. What do you think?
