front to rear brake ballance and pulling

Also keep in mind the hub retaining is the only thing keeping the hub, axle and wheel retained, if it works loose you've had a really bad day. Clean the threads on the housing and nut very carefully, use Locktite and torque to 140 ft. lbs (Factory torque spec). Some use the factory tabwasher, I don't, a single fastner tab washer is a joke and a false sense of security, I don't use single fastner tabwashers on anything.
 
When you put the car in neutral with engine off, is it easy to push forward? If not, the PWDA is shot...if you can push it forward, problem's somewhere else.
 
oh, as for the nut and torque setting, I'll have to check the tool box...might be making a trip to NAPA.

Pretty sure my torque wrench goes up to 120, maybe 140. Don't think I have any sockets or box ends bigger than 1-3/8" so I'll have to add that 1-7/8" to the shopping list....
 
okay, getting a little closer to figuring out this problem.

I'm presently looking at the rear brakes and I've concluded that the axle was leaking oil from the hub to axle flange seal. The gasket was oily and the o-ring flattened. The bearing itself has some play, probably contributing/causing the problem. Definitely will replace the bearings.

This is an interesting axle design, I didn't realize it was a full-floater.

I seem to have brake fluid leaking somewhere too. I may have a small leak on the drivers side rear brake cylinder, haven't found the front leak yet (both sides of the reservoir are equally low). The MC has some moisture around it, can't tell if it's just old clutch fluid from the last time it was bled or if it's leaking fluid. I'll clean it up and keep an eye on it. Also going to pull the front brakes for inspection shortly.
 
okay, pressed in seals on the hub are a-ok, it's just the bearings and flange seals. I guess I'll replace the oil seal anyway, if the bearing is going to have to come out.

As for the brake leak, no indication of any leak on the front calipers....

I'm presently getting in to trouble. The bushings on the front suspension were all pretty shot so I'm in the process of removing the a-arm and spindle to see how hard they'll be to replace. wish me luck!

yea, took the front apart, was a good learning experience.

The lower a-arm to swivel axle mount (sorry, I'm bad with the nomenclature) is still in pretty good shape, and the spindle is nice and snug on the swivel axle too, so it doesn't look like I'll have to rebuild it anytime soon. I'm going to finish taking it apart, clean everything, then regrease and reassemble anyway though.

The bushings were shot, both the frame to A-arm mounts and the upper trunion bushing. Luckily I have some poly bushings waiting to be installed. Just test fitted them on the passenger side, all looks well.

As for the brakes, my initial glance at the pads was misleading. They're down under 1/16", ready for replacement. The rotors are also thinner than minimum spec, so I'll replace them as well. Calipers don't seem to be leaking or seizing, so I'm just going to clean them off, and go with new pads and rotors.

Tomorrow I'll reassemble the front passenger side and start on the drivers side.

Oh, one question: the front bearing hub oil is pretty cooked, it's more like maple syrup. Anyway to crack it open and regrease the bearings? haynes says it's not servicable, but I'm not sure I believe them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
