Front license plate theft

Here's a weird one that maybe someone can shed some light on. We have been out of town for the past 8 days. During that time someone stole the front license plate off my Sprite, which was parked in our carport. The didn't touch the 4 unlocked bikes next to it, nor did they do anything else to the car or to the surroundings. I have to admit that the car looks better without it, so I'm not really upset about the loss, but I'm a little worried about why someone would steal it. Is is there some value in a license plate for a legally registered vehicle?

I would contact the police
Someone is probably using it in a crime

scavenger hunt? I think front plates are pointless. we have them here in NY too.I know quite a few people who have gotten tickets for not having one.
I agree. report it. If your state is like NY, you need to get a new one.

Lets just hope it was a kids prank. If you catch him, tatto the tag number on his butt! Just, hmmm, kidding.:rolleyes2: PJ

Of course you are - brand the tag number.... ;)

It's a big problem....not so much with LBC's....bigger with Civics and Acuras.
They steal a plate off a similar car and put it on theirs for commission of a crime or if their plates are expired.
Know a guy...know him for over 40 years.
Their son got rousted out of bed early one morning by a SWAT team and hauled to jail, no bail, charged with bank robbery.
Had to get a lawyer, went to court, full trial....some morons had stolen his plate, robbed a bank.....after months and months, the judge finally turned to the prosecutor and says....."Is this all you have for evidence?"
"Yes, your honor".
"Case dismissed".

But it cost them tens of thousands of dollars in the process.

Call the cops.

Thanks for all the comments guys. My gut feeling is that it was just a kids prank, but I guess I'll just report it to the cops and see what they say. Better safe than sorry.

...and Billy - I am mortally offended by the suggestion that it would "just rust off". :friendly_wink:

My first though was that it was stolen to put on a car to be used for crime. It is a big problem.

Can't imagine. It's the rear plate - with current sticker that would be worth stealing.
