Front Hub Removal Question

Ok, so this may have a blindingly obvious "No!" as the answer, but I'm learning as I go....

I need to remove the front hub to get at the suspension pieces that need replacing. The description for this in both the Bentley and Haynes manuals is to take off the caliper and then unbolt the outboard bolt on the stub axle to get the hub off, hopefully without leaving anything behind.

My question is this - if I don't want to do any work on the hub (at the moment, at least), wouldn't it be easier to unbolt the inboard bolt on the stub axle and pull off the hub and the axle? The schematics look like it should be feasable. Has anyone tried this or reccommends against it?

Thanks,
Mark

Do it as per the manual, it's fairly simple.
After you get the brake caliper off, temporarily suspend it by a piece of stout wire to avoid stressing the brake hose.
The hardest part is usualy getting the recalcitrant dust cap off which is best removed with channel lock pliers.
Keep the bearings clean and repack with wheel brg grease on reassy.
Replacing the trunnions, ball joints and bushings is easily done with the stub axle in place.

It's a better idea to undo the bearing retainer nut and pull the hub off the axel. The stub axel usually dosen't come apart from the upright very easily.
I think your making an easy job harder.

Thanks guys. I figured as much, but it's always worth asking. I reckon this is going to prove a huge learning curve.....going from complete novice to barely competant in three turns of a wrench /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

that is the understatement of the day. it took me a good 8 hours of heat, beating, cursing, etc to get the stub axle off one time. Do it like it says in the manual.
