Front Grill Replace 3000

victoria br. has a front grill (center vertical toothy section) for 189.00. Any experience with this or similar part from them, also, looking from underneath, seems to be bolts on bottom and can feel bolts on top, may involve removing the metal sheets than run back of grill to front of radiator, one each side. Seems it might be tough to actually take grill out once loosened. Comments on how to remove? Thanks, Jay Glass '65 3000
 
The MKII/III grill can be a true test of patience.

The hardware is also unique, in that at least some of the "bolts" have the hex-head portion in the middle (picture a threaded stud with a nut run halfway up).

I've installed that type grill a few times, and it always makes me glad I have the 100/6_/_MKI style car.

I haven't done it enough to know any tricks about doing it the easy way (if such a thing exists). But yes, you'll definitely want to remove the radiator air ducts before taking this on, it improves access considerably.

VB trim parts can be "iffy", so you have to take your chances; some are good and others not so much.

I recommend that you study the (factory) parts catalog to memorize the assemby layout before proceding.
 
Hello Jay. I have the exact same year as you and installed my grill assembly last year. I have no comment about the Victoria grill. It may be fine, but I don't know.

First, I recommend you get the page from the parts manual that covers the front grill so you can see all the components that tie into the front grill assembly. There are a couple of brackets, one in each lower "corner" that extend out to the splash deflectors in the wheel well area that are secured in the grill assembly.

The grill is held in place by one or two plain studs and I think four special studs with a hex center. Picture a bolt head with a threaded stud coming out of both ends and you will have the general idea. One stud end fastens to the body while the other end serves as the post that locks down the grill assembly and any other parts (like the brackets) that Healey decided to tie in. Lubricate these well before you even try to loosen the nuts holding the grill in place. If you break these, they need to be replaced and you will have to remove them from the car, along with all the other parts they hold in place.

I'm kind of in the middle of this right now. I got the old one out very easily. I didn't even remove the front wheels. I am awaiting a new one from AH Spares and then the car coming back from the painter. The fasteners came out straight away.

While on this subject, the inner part of the grill surround is suppose to have silver paint. Does anyone know the type and color (aluminum color?) Is anything special to be done to prepare the chrome to take paint? Is it the same color done on the inside of the bumpers?
 
thank you all for the very detailed in just the right way info. Currently winding up painting the garage, will rest a year or two (LOL) and then tackle the grill, turns out the big Victoria sale is only a few bucks less than Moss with whom I usually deal, and proximity is next day standard arrival with good luck so far (25years) on quality.
